Kid-Free Trip: Sedona, AZ

I heard this quote awhile back, and it really stuck with me. “It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.” Once a year, we take a trip just the two of us. Not because we don’t like our kids, but we like each other more.

We’re so fortunate that we were able to continue our tradition and make it at the end of 2020. Shout out to my in-laws for being able to watch both kids at our house. THANK YOU!

We decided on Sedona by the distance of a non-stop flight and the all the options we could do without the kids. Also, since we went during a pandemic, we checked their covid numbers & the city’s covid protocol. Overall, we felt safe with their precautions.

Hiking Trails-

Devil’s BridgeWe were able to park in the designated parking lot right by the beginning of the trail. The hike there was easy until the very end. It was steep at some parts, but much easier without a kid on your back! There wasn’t a crazy amount of people waiting at the bridge, either. We were able to take our picture, soak in the scene, and go down one level to drone.

Cathedral Rock- we didn’t have time to hike this, but I wished we did! The views from here looked amazing in the pictures.

Pink Jeep Tour- We decided last minute to do the broken arrow & scenic rim combo. As luck would have it, we were the only ones in the jeep, like we are VIPs or something 😂 (even though we were the only ones in our jeep, it was still required to wear masks, which we don’t mind at all). Our driver was very well-versed in all things Sedona & he even offered to be our photographer. I highly recommend this tour. If you only have time for one, I recommend the broken arrow tour. We were dangling in a 45 degree angle at one point!

Wineries- When we asked our pink jeep tour driver the best wineries, he suggested we go to Safeway! He said we can order wine flights there & that a sommelier also works there. We didn’t take his advice so comment below if you did that. There were several wineries all nearby each other. We only had time to try these two:

Page Spring Cellars- We ordered the roasted vegetable platter, which was delicious, and the reserve wine flight. We enjoyed the wine. Only con is they were smaller pours.

Javelina Leap Winery- We chose 6 wines for a flight and they were pretty heavy with their pours. There was only one other couple there. They were so far away that we were pretty much yelling at each other to have a conversation. 😂

Restaurants– At the beginning of the trip, we did stop at Whole Foods to get some protein bars, snacks, coffee, brews, and a Margherita pizza, but we did check out a few restaurants.

Oak Creek Brewery – located in Tiaquepaque Village. I ordered the Oak Creek Hefeweizen & TLAQUEPAQUE burger with bacon. Hubs ordered the Baja burger & VILLAGE NUT BROWN ALE. We both really enjoyed our meal.

Creek side Bistro- we ordered the bruschetta board for two & crab cakes. We really, really loved it. Afterwards, we went up the stairs to creek side coffee and bakery for coffee and dessert. We sat on the patio & enjoyed the scenic views.

Horseshoe Bend- a little under 3 hour drive from Sedona, is this magical place. We got there a little after sunrise & hardly anyone was there- the parking lot was pretty empty. They do practice social distancing and masks there.

Antelope Canyon- we really wanted to go here, but they were closed due to the Navajo Tribe being hit so hard with covid. I’m not sure if they have reopened yet, but would definitely book a tour.

Chapel of Holy Cross- beautiful church built on the edge of a cliff. Sit on a pew, take a deep breath & soak in all the feelings that may come.

Montezuma Castle- on our way to the airport, we saw the sign for this unique National Monument and had to detour. This castle was a structure constructed between 1100 and 1425 AD. This was a short stop, but it was really cool to see.

Jerome, AZ– about 45 mins away from Sedona is this quaint little ghost town. We checked out the Jerome Hotel where people have admitted to hauntings. The hotel used to be a hospital where 9,000 deaths occurred. People say that they see a 5 year old girl in the hallway laughing. When we spoke to workers about the spooky vibe, they did admit to mysterious things happening (things falling off the shelf, spirits leaving people? A lady tried to explain that one, but I still didn’t get it). We, also, tried the wine at Caduceus Cellar. They were really strict with their mask policy (literally mask off, sip, mask on) so we didn’t stay there too long. Definitely check out Nellie Bly Kaleidoscope, the largest kaleidoscope dealer in the world. We bought a cute one for our daughter as a souvenir.

Where to stay- we stayed at this fun tiny camp cabin. It came with a fire pit, kitchen, outdoor patio, everything you’d want from a home away from home. Some of the cabins had a hot tub. It definitely looked relaxing after hiking.

  1. Love the idea of ensuring that you have family memories with just the two of you. Love all the suggestions here. Pretty cool.
