Kid-Free Trip: Key West, FL

Every year we try to go on a kid-free trip. The first year was the hardest because for the first 18 months, it was just us and our little babe. It wasn’t until one of my friends told me, “Just do it”. Those 3 little words were more than just a brand slogan. Every worry, anxiety, excuse I had in my head wasn’t going to go away without actually letting go. First we left our daughter with my sister for one night. We realized how great it was to be able to eat at a restaurant at the same time lol and not have to pack so much for just an outing. We also realized how refreshing it was for us to see one another with clear, non-drowsy, eyes. Flash forward to 4 years later and another daughter, we are so fortunate that we have a village that allows us the time to continue our kid-free trips

Our annual kid-free trip anded us in Key West, FL. We had 4 days to get away and chose Key West on flight distance and that neither one of us have been there. Most of our trips, we pack in a lot of things to do; we didn’t want to do that this time.

MUST SEE:

Southernmost Point Buoy– 18 feet above sea level, the southern most point of the United States is marked by a buoy. We visited during the week after brunch and there were only less than 10 groups in front of us.

Mile 0- Located on the corner of Fleming Street and Whitehead Street, the end of the US 1 that stretches 2,369 miles from Maine ends right here.

Key Lime- A must have while in Key West is their key lime pies. We tried pies from Kermit’s, Key West Lime Pie Co., The Coconut Factory, and the Southernmost Key Lime shop. Our favorites were Kermit’s and The Coconut Factory.

Smather’s Beach-

Mallory Square– Mallory Square is the perfect spot to watch the sunset so get here early and snag a front row seat.

The Hemingway Home– The Ernest Hemingway Home was built in 1851. They have daily tours, no reservations required, but must have cash. We didn’t have cash with us so we just walked around the outside of the property.

EAT:

Litte Pearl-Do yourself a favor and make a reservation here! Your taste buds will thank you. They offered a 4 course menu and each one was a delight. We also ordered a bottle of wine. We took a Lyft back to our hotel, but how convenient if we could walk there.

Conch Republic Seafood Company We came here for brunch and were so stuffed. Hubs got a flight of local beers and I got a Bloody Mary (which was delicious!). We also got the smoked fish dip (yum!), conch chowder (double yum), and the local fresh catch of the day. The restaurant had a cute gift store where we got the girls a cute book, “Goodnight Key West” and a mermaid doll. It’s also located on the wharf, where we walked around in,

Bagatelle– Great spot for brunch. I recommend making a reservation as this place gets busy. We were fortunate (since we didn’t have our kids) that we got seated right away in a high top in the bar area. We tried the southern Benedict and biscuits and gravy.

Mangoes– We were walking around Duval St. and saw this cute corner restaurant. It had an island vibe and the food was delicious. We had the conch fritters (must try when in Key West), smoked fish dip, Mangoes house salad with shrimp, and yellowtail snapper.

STAY:

Parrot Key Hotel– We chose this place because it was a bit more isolated. We also like the serenity that their website pictures gave me. It has 4 pools which included an adults only pool. They have a sand area with hammocks and lounge chairs. It was nice to lay on a hammock, feel the breeze, and see the palm trees.

Escaping to paradise, just the two of us is so important. No matter where you go or the amount of time, parents need a getaway, too!
